Louis Bouilhet (1822–1869)
Bouilhet, Louis (bö-lyā’). A French poet (1822–69). He first achieved fame with ‘Meloenis, a Story of Rome’ in the time of the Cæsars, and ‘The Fossils,’ a series of delineations of antediluvians. His versified dramas, ‘Mme. de Montarcy’ (1856); ‘Dolorès’ (1862); and especially ‘The Conspiracy of Amboise,’ are elegant in style, rich in imagery, perfect in melody, but lack compactness of structure and are open to moral censure. The same faults are found in his comedies ‘Uncle Million’ (1861); ‘Faustine’ (1864); and specially in his posthumous ‘Mdlle. Aïssé.’
