Luis Vélez de Guevara (1579–1644)

Velez de Guevara y Dueñas, Luis (gā-vä’rä ē dwān’yäs). A Spanish dramatist and romancer; born in Ecija, Andalusia, Jan. 1579; died at Madrid, Nov. 10, 1644. He wrote four hundred plays, all very long and full of wit. ‘Empire after Death’ and ‘The King is More Important than One’s Own Flesh and Blood’ are the best known. He also wrote a novel or romance, ‘The Lame Devil,’ from which Lesage freely borrowed in writing upon the same theme.
