Sévigné, Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de (sāv-ēn-yā’). A celebrated French letter-writer; born at Paris, Feb. 1626; died at the Castle of Grignan, in Dauphiny, April 18, 1696. Her ‘Letters,’ mainly to her daughter, are regarded as models of the familiar epistolary style. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
