Chagas, Manuel Pinheiro (pēn-yā’rō-shä’gäs). A Portuguese poet and miscellaneous writer; born at Lisbon, 1842; died in 1895. Among his works are: ‘A Poem of Youth,’ ‘The Angel of the Hearth’; some novels, as ‘The Court of John V.,’ ‘The Red Mask,’ ‘Death’s Guerrillas’ (1872); ‘The Viscountess’s Secret’; dramas: ‘Senhorita de Valflor’ (1867); ‘Helen’; ‘The Jewish Woman’; ‘During the Battle’ (1870); some volumes of political comment and satire, as ‘Ministers of State, Priests, and Kings’; ‘Critical Essays’; ‘Portuguese Scenes and Fancies’; ‘Celebrated Portuguese’; ‘Madrid: Impressions of Travel.’
