Matthias Claudius (1740–1815)

Claudius, Matthias (klou’dē-ös). A German poet; born at Reinfeld, Holstein, Aug. 15, 1740; died at Altona Jan. 21, 1815. Though his first literary venture ‘Trifles and Tales,’ had little originality, his simple ballads, ‘Join in with Clear and Full Accord’; ‘O Crown the Bowl’; ‘Once Lived a Giant Goliath,’ became popular favorites. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
