Émile Souvestre (18061854)
Souvestre, Émile (sö-vestr’). A French dramatist and novelist; born in 1806; died in 1854. He is celebrated as the author of ‘An Attic Philosopher’ (1850). His other works include: ‘The Last Bretons’ (1836); ‘Travels in Finisterre’; ‘The Confessions of a Workman’; ‘Pierre and Jean’; ‘The Greased Pole’; ‘Man and Money’; etc. His plays include ‘Henri Hamelin’ and ‘Uncle Baptiste. “ (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
