Oliver Goldsmith (1730?–1774)
Goldsmith, Oliver. An English-Irish poet, novelist, dramatist, and miscellaneous prose-writer; born in Pallas, County Longford, Ireland, Nov. 10, 1730?; died at London, April 4, 1774. His first literary ventures were: ‘Enquiry into the Present State of Polite Learning in Europe’ and ‘The Citizen of the World.’ Next appeared ‘The Traveller’; ‘The Deserted Village’; ‘The Vicar of Wakefield’; ‘The Good-Natured Man’; and ‘She Stoops to Conquer.’ His essays and his histories, his biographies and his textbooks are numerous.
