Oliver Otis Howard (1830–1909)
Howard, Oliver Otis. A distinguished American general; born at Leeds, ME, Nov. 8, 1830; died in 1909. A graduate of West Point he rose to the rank of brevet major-general United States Army in the Civil War, and was president of Howard University (1869–73). He wrote: ‘Donald’s School-Days’ (1879); ‘Nez Percé Joseph,’ a valuable contribution to Indian literature; ‘Isabella of Castile’; ‘Our Wild Indians.’
