Oscar Solomon Straus (1850–1926)
Straus, Oscar Solomon. A German-American merchant, reformer, and writer; born in Otterberg, Bavaria, Dec. 23, 1850; died in 1926. He graduated at Columbia College, New York, 1871; was minister to Turkey 1887–1898 and ambassador 1909–10; Secretary of Commerce and Labor 1906–09; and was a leader in movements for the reform of local politics, and the improvement of the conditions of the poor. He published: ‘Origin of the Republican Form of Government in the United States’ (1886); ‘Roger Williams, the Pioneer of Religious Liberty’; ‘U.S. Doctrine of Citizenship’; ‘The American Spirit’ (1913).
