Paul Gerhardt (1607–1676)
Gerhardt, Paul (gār’härdt). A German hymn-writer of eminence; born in Gräfenhainichen, Saxony, March 12, 1607; died at Lübben, June 7, 1676. He was a stubbornly separatist Lutheran clergyman, involved in the political turmoils of the time. The production of his more than 100 famous hymns—including particularly “O Head all blood and wounds,” “Now all the woodlands rest,” “Oh, how shall I receive Thee?”—began about 1660.
