Petronius (c. 27–66)

Petronius Arbiter (pe-trō’nē-us är’bit-ėr). A Latin writer of satirical fiction. He lived in the first century of our era, but nothing is known with certainty of his life. Of his story or novel, called ‘Satires,’ which originally consisted of about 20 “books,” there is extant a considerable fragment, ‘Trimalchio’s Banquet.’ (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
