Pierre Maine de Biran (1766–1824)
Maine de Biran, Marie François Pierre Gonthier (mān dė bē-ro
‘). A noted French philosopher; born at Bergerac, Nov. 29, 1766; died on July 16, 1824. He served in Louis XVI.’s army, and was member of the Council of Five Hundred in 1797. He was the founder of modern French spiritualism in philosophy. He wrote: ‘Influence of Habit upon the Thinking Faculty’ (1803); ‘Decomposition of Thought’ (1805); ‘Foundations of Psychology’ (1859); etc. ‘Works,’ 3 vols., edited by Cousin, 1841; 3 vols. additional, by Naville, 1846–59.
