Pierre Rousseau (1716–1785)
Rousseau, Pierre (rö-sō’). A French dramatist; born at Toulouse, Aug. 19, 1716 or 1725; died at Bouillon, Nov. 10, 1785. He brought ridicule upon himself by assuming the title of “Rousseau of Toulouse” to distinguish himself from “Rousseau of Geneva.” In collaboration with Favart, he published ‘A Coquette Without Knowing It’ (1744), and ‘Mistakes’ (1744), played with some success. He also wrote ‘The False Step’ (1755), a novel; ‘History of the Card-Sharpers’ (1758); and others.
