Raphael Holinshed (c. 15151573)
Holinshed, Raphael (hol’inz-hed). An English chronicler; born at Bosley, Cheshire (?), about 1515?; died at Bramcote (?), 1573. The famous ‘Chronicles’ (1578)—not wholly his, however—was enlarged in 1587. The Elizabethan dramatists, especially Shakespeare, drew largely on this work for material. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
