Robert Green Ingersoll (1833–1899)
Ingersoll, Robert Green. A distinguished American orator, lecturer, and lawyer; born in Dresden, NY, Aug. 11, 1833; died at Dobb’s Ferry, NY, July 21, 1899. He was well known as a free-thinker. He went west when twelve years old, becoming in time a school-teacher. He began to practice law in 1854. He was colonel of Illinois cavalry during the War. In 1866 he was made attorney-general for Illinois. He published: ‘The Gods’ (1876); ‘Ghosts’; ‘Some Mistakes of Moses’ (1879); ‘Lectures Complete’; ‘Prose Poems and Selections’; and many other pamphlets and miscellaneous articles.
