Robert Greene (1558–1592)
Greene, Robert. An English dramatist; born in Norwich about 1558; died in London, Sept. 3, 1592. His works rank him as the most original and perhaps the ablest British dramatist before Shakespeare: especially the ‘History of Orlando Furioso’; ‘Comical History of Alphonsus, King of Aragon’; ‘Honorable History of Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay’; and ‘The Scottish Historie of James IV.’ His pamphlets and tracts, which he wrote with great rapidity and ability, are noteworthy, ‘Never Too Late’ and ‘Greene’s Groat’s Worth of Wit Bought with a Million of Repentance’ being most widely known.
