Saint-Marc Girardin, François Auguste (sa
-mark’ zhē-rär-da‘). A French literary critic; born at Paris, Feb. 12, 1801; died on April 11, 1873. With Philarète Chasles he wrote ‘View of French Literature in the Sixteenth Century’ (1828), which won the first prize of the Academy. He wrote also: ‘Political and Literary Notes on Germany’ (1835); ‘Intermediate Education in Germany’ (2 vols., 1835–38); ‘Essay on Literature and Morals’ (2 vols., 1845); ‘Course of Dramatic Literature: or, The Use of the Passions in the Drama’ (1843; 11th ed. 5 vols., 1875–77); ‘Recollections and Political Reflections of a Journalist’ (1859); ‘La Fontaine and the Fabulists’ (2 vols., 1867); ‘J. J. Rousseau, his Life and Works’ (2 vols., 1875).
