Saint Vincent of Lérins (d. c. 450)
Vincent of Lérins, or Vincentius Lerinensis. An ecclesiastical writer of the first half of the fifth century; he was a native of Gaul and a monk of the monastery of Lerinum, an island (now St. Honorat) opposite Cannes. He is author of a ‘Warning against the Profane Novelties of all Heretics.’ In that work is for the first time laid down formally the test of Catholicity of doctrine, which is that the Catholic doctrine is “what everywhere, what always, what by all hath been believed” (quod ubique, quod semper, and quod ab omnibus creditum est).
