Salomon Gessner (1730–1788)

Gessner, Salomon (ges’ner). A Swiss poet and painter; born in Zürich, April 1, 1730; died there, March 2, 1788. His first success as a poet was in the ‘Song of the Swiss to his Armed Sweetheart,’ in 1751. ‘Daphnis’ and a volume of ‘Idylls’ spread his fame widely and the ‘Death of Abel’ had great vogue in its day. He affected a mock-heroic style.
