Samuel Stehman Halderman (1812–1880)
Halderman, Samuel Stehman. An American naturalist and prose-writer; born in Locust Grove, PA, Aug. 12, 1812; died in Chickies, PA, Sept. 10, 1880. He was the first to hold the chair of comparative philology at the University of Pennsylvania. Among his works are: ‘Zoölogical Contributions’ (1842–43); ‘Rhymes of the Poets,’ published under the pen-name of “Felix Ago” (1868); ‘Pennsylvania Dutch’ (1872); ‘Outlines of Etymology’ (1877); and ‘Word Building’ (1881).
