Sarah Josepha Buell Hale (1788–1879)

Hale, Sarah Josepha (Buell). An American editor and writer; born in Newport, NH, Oct. 24, 1788; died in Philadelphia, April 30, 1879. From 1828 until 1837 she edited the Ladies’ Magazine, which was then merged into Godey’s Lady’s Book, of which she became editor. Among her publications are: ‘Sketches of all Distinguished Women from the Creation to the Present Day’ (1853); ‘The Genius of Oblivion, and Other Poems’; ‘Northwood,’ a novel (1827); ‘Sketches of American Character’; ‘Traits of American Life’; and many others.
