Sir Francis Cowley Burnand (1836–1917)
Burnand, Sir Francis Cowley. An English humorist; born in London, Nov. 29, 1836; died in 1917. After graduation from Cambridge, he devoted his attention to play-writing, and wrote about 100 burlesques, extravaganzas, and successful comedies, including ‘Black-Eyed Susan’ and ‘Ixion.’ After 1880 he was the editor of Punch. Among his books ‘Happy Thoughts’ (1868) and its sequels are the most popular. The ‘New History of Sandford and Merton’ (1872), ‘Quite at Home’ (1890), and ‘The Colonel’ are also favorites.
