Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson (1810–1895)

Rawlinson, Henry Creswicke, Sir. An English diplomat and Oriental scholar of great repute, brother of George; born at Chadlington, Oxfordshire, April 11, 1810; died on March 5, 1895. He is chiefly remarkable for his researches among the cuneiform inscriptions of Persia, and for his translation of the Behistun inscription, written in one of the old Persian languages. He is the author of ‘England and Russia in the East’ (1875), and the ‘Cuneiform Inscriptions of Western Asia’ (1861–84).
