Sophocles (c. 496–406 B.C.)

Sophocles (sof’ō-klēz). The great Greek tragic poet was born at Colonus, near Athens, about 496 B.C.; died in 406. His seven extant tragedies are conjectured to have been given to the public in the following order: ‘Antigone’ (440 B.C.); ‘Electra’; ‘Trachiniæ’; ‘Œdipus Tyrannus’; ‘Ajax’; ‘Philoctetes’ and ‘Œdipus at Colonus.’ (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
