Stephen Cutter Carpenter (d. c. 1820)
Carpenter, Stephen Cutter. An American journalist and prose-writer; born in England; died about 1820. He came to the United States (1803) and settled in Charleston, SC, where he soon founded and published with John Bristed the Monthly Register Magazine and Review of the United States. Later he was editor of the Mirror of Taste and Dramatic Censor, in which appeared some clever sketches of American actors. His works include: ‘Memoirs of Jefferson’ (2 vols., 1809); ‘Select American Speeches’ (1815); and under the pen-name of “Donald Campbell,” ‘Overland Journey to India’ (2d ed. 1809–10), and ‘Letter on the Present Times.’
