Thomas Hope (1770?–1831)
Hope, Thomas. An English novelist; born about 1770; died on Feb. 3, 1831. He was one of three brothers, wealthy merchants in Amsterdam. Among his works are: ‘Household Furniture and Decorations’ (1805); ‘The Costume of the Ancients’ (1809); ‘Designs of Modern Costumes’ (1812). ‘Anastasius’ (1819) was his best-known work. Byron told the Countess of Blessington that he wept bitterly on reading ‘Anastasius,’ for two reasons—one that he had not written it, and the other that Hope had.
