Tyrwhitt, Thomas (tir’it). An English classical scholar and writer; born in London, March 27, 1730; died there, Aug. 15, 1786. Among his works are: ‘Observations on Some Passages of Shakespeare’ (1766); a celebrated edition of Chaucer (1773); editions of Isæus’s ‘Orphica’ and Aristotle’s ‘Poetics’; critical dissertations on Babrius, Euripides, Aristophanes, and Strabo.
