Ulfilas (c. 311–381?)
Ulfilas, or Wulfila (ul’fi-las). The Gothic translator of the Bible; born about 311, in the country of the Goths north of the Danube; died about 381, at Constantinople. He was the first bishop of the Arian Visigoths. Of the Gothic Bible there are extant a considerable part of the Gospels, Corinthians complete, fragments of the other epistles and of Ezra and Nehemiah, and a few passages of Genesis, Ezekiel, and Maccabees. The most considerable MS. copy, called Codex Argenteus, is in the library of the University of Upsala.
