Walter Colton (1797–1851)
Colton, Walter. An American miscellaneous writer; born in Rutland, VT, May 9, 1797; died in Philadelphia, Jan. 22, 1851. In 1845 he went to California, and in Monterey established the first newspaper of the State, called the Californian. He wrote many books of interest, including ‘A Visit to Athens and Constantinople’ (1836) and ‘Three Years in California’ (1850). In 1851 Dr. Cheever edited ‘The Sea and Sailor, Notes of France and Italy, and Other Literary Remains,’ with a biography of the author.
