Walter William Skeat (1835–1912)
Skeat, Walter William. A distinguished English Anglo-Saxon scholar, philologist, and lexicographer; born in London, Nov. 21, 1835; died on Oct. 7, 1912. He was professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge (from 1883); one of the founders of the English Dialect Society; and an authority on early English literature. He edited ‘The Vision of William concerning Piers Ploughman’ (1867–85); Barbour’s ‘The Bruce’ (1870–89); ‘Specimens of English Literature, 1298–1579’ (1871 and 1872); an edition of Chaucer (6 vols., 1894); numerous poems, metrical romances, etc.; and compiled ‘An Etymological Dictionary of the English Language’ (4 vols., 1879–81; new ed. 1884), his chief work.
