William Robert Spencer (17701834)
Spencer, William Robert. An English poet; born in 1770; died in 1834. Among his writings are: ‘Urania; or, the Illuminé,’ a comedy (1802); ‘The Year of Sorrow’ (1804); a poetical necrology; a posthumous collection of ‘Poems’ (1835). He translated Bürger’s ‘Lenore’ in 1796. Some of his songs are still popular favorites, as ‘Beth Gelert; or, The Grave of the Greyhound’; ‘Wife, Children, and Friends’; ‘When Midnight o’er the Moonless Skies’; ‘Too Late I Stayed: Forgive the Crime’; ‘The Emigrant’s Grave.’
