47. Outlines of Spanish Literature
This is a general course covering briefly the whole of Spanish literature and involving a large amount of reading. It is particularly adapted to the general reader who has no knowledge of the literature of Spain or to the student of comparative literature who wishes a working knowledge of one of the important component parts of European literature.
Reading:El Cid; Alfonso X of Castile; Cervantes; Lope de Vega; Calderón; Juana Inés de la Cruz; Caballero; de Espronceda; Zorrilla; Valera; Alarcón; Echegaray; de Pereda; Galdós; Pardo Bazán; Valdés; Menéndez y Pelayo.
This course is in part a repetition of the last section of the preceding. It gives a general view of the literature of Spain during the last two centuries and provides the student or the general reader with an excellent and well-balanced knowledge of the resources of this interesting modern European literature.
Reading:Almqvist; Caballero; de Espronceda; Zorrilla; Valera; Alarcón; Echegaray; de Pereda; Galdós; Pardo Bazán; Valdés; Menéndez y Pelayo; Latin-American Literature before 1888; Latin-American Literature after 1888.
With the development of South American trade and recent events in Mexico, attention has been turned to Latin America and its history. The literature of South America deserves the notice of the modern student who believes in seeing the Americas first. In this course he will be introduced to the most significant names in the literature of Spanish America.
Reading:Latin-American Literature before 1888; Latin-American Literature after 1888.
The literature of Portugal is not extensive, and a knowledge of it is not absolutely necessary to an understanding of the main currents of European literature. Its more interesting manifestations are in the Portuguese settlements of the New World. It is with the literature of Latin America that this course deals chiefly.
Reading:de Camões; Latin-American Literature before 1888; Latin-American Literature after 1888.
