The Chapel
By Johann Ludwig Uhland (17871862)
Translation of Walter William Skeat

Peering down the valley still;
There beneath, by fount and meadow,
Rings the shepherd’s carol shrill.
Solemn sounds the last lament;
Hushed are all the boy’s loud carols,
Still he stands with ears attent.
They who filled the vale with glee;
There aloft, O youthful shepherd,
Men shall chant the dirge for thee!
