Wine

By Friedrich von Bodenstedt (1819–1892)

IN the goblet’s magic measure,

In the wine’s all-powerful spirit,

Lieth poison and delight:

Lieth purest, basest pleasure,

E’en according to the merit

Of the drinker ye invite.

Lo, the fool in baseness sunken,

Having drunk till he is tired,

When he drinks, behold him drunken;

When we drink, we are inspired.
