Spring Day

Grace Hazard Conkling

From “Out of Mexico”

THE POMEGRANATE tree at the foot of the garden

Stands close to the river.

Its blossoms stain the air:

They shake against the white water,

Wavering on the fluent brightness

Like the vermilion found with quicksilver.
