The Monadnock

John Gould Fletcher

From “Chicago Notes”

PYLON for some incomplete gateway

Through which the high priests of the sun

Might blow their trumpets in the morning,

Strong red and yellow buttress,

What breed of desert dwellers

Left you here in the midst of the city,

To mock with your severity

The gaudy frippery of more bright façades,

To smolder like a polished block

Of dark Egyptian stone?
