§ 24. Gibson’s Edition of Camden’s Britannia

Among other considerable topographical undertakings of this period was the edition of Camden’s Britannia (1695) translated and edited by Edmund Gibson, bishop of London, Tanner’s friend and fellow-worker, which included contributions by many contemporary antiquaries, and Magna Britannia et Hibernia antiqua et nova (1720–31), which, apparently a booksellers’ venture, did not claim originality, but was an able compilation edited by Thomas Cox from published sources. Its six volumes contain only English counties.
